my american odyssey ~ part 1: washington in springtime

Hi everyone...it's nice to be home...
But, it was great to be travelling again...it's been a while :)
Sorry for the lack of posts...the iPad failed me in the photo uploading department...so I'm making up for it now!
The posts this week come with a warning: photo overload. With over 700 to choose from I've done my best to cull...but I have to confess it was hard, so I thought I'd break the posts up into bite sized offerings (as opposed to super sized!!)
First stop Washington. A lot like Canberra...except much, much bigger. I only had one day to see the sights and I made the most of it. The weather was stunning...a perfect day spent on the Mall...the spring blossoms were just starting to do their thing...
but I actually found the bare trees quite beautiful as well...
The National Mall...I walked its length...from the Lincoln Memorial at one end...it was spring break...there were a gazillion kids, although this was early in the morning and I think most of them were still in bed!
to the Capitol building at the other...
Did you notice the duck with its bum in the air...thought you'd enjoy that...took me ages to get that shot!
There was a vast array of amazing sculpture...these from the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn museum and sculpture garden...featuring international and national contemporary art...
...this was my favourite...
Of course there were monuments galore on the Mall...some commemorating war, although I prefer to think of them as monuments to peace...I can dream.
...and speaking of dreams...this small stone engraving is embedded at the top of the Lincoln Memorial steps...it was easy to miss but I'm so glad I didn't...
standing on the spot where Martin Luther King gave that famous speech sent chills down my spine...
And of course you can't go to Washington without seeing this...
...I was particularly taken with the porch light!
...and the way these guys were getting around...
Next edition: inside some of Washington's galleries and museums...as you can imagine...George was everywhere!!
